EXPANDED CINEMA : TECHNIQUES AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
Learn basic and practical techniques for expanded cinema performance. We’ll begin by learning single channel projection on 16mm, then explore short form loops, advances applications and methods for organizing the image materials. We’ll cover live hand and lens image manipulation, reflective materials and surface options. You’ll learn the unique potentials of different models of projectors, their ability to speed up, slow down and even melt the image (safely) on screen. As we learn the skills needed to achieve various effects, we’ll site examples by various contemporary artists and talk through the relationship of subject and form. You’ll work hands on with the EIKI projector as the primary instrument, the CIRO splicer, sync blocks, rewinds, a variety of lenses and other “plug-ins” You’ll also learn how to accurately time sequences when projecting with 2, 3, and 4 projectors. This is very much a hands-on learning exploration that begins with single channel projection and will stretch our understanding of the potentialities of the moving image. Found footage will be provided, all equipment and materials. You will leave with the knowledge to continue to work in this practice at home, and a list of venues to pursue for exhibition.
